Mr Boruc was known to have such a tattoo.

The hoaxers had also set up a fake Facebook page and added bogus comments from girlfriend Sara which appeared to back up the allegations, he said.

A man posing as Mr Boruc's financial adviser had contacted News of the World executives to discuss the possibility of the newspaper being granted an exclusive interview with the footballer if they would make the story "go away".

But the scam was unravelled when mobile phone records showed calls had been made from a Glasgow hotel at a time when Mr Boruc, 31, had a perfect alibi - he was on holiday in Sardinia.

Mr Dunlop said as soon as the newspaper realised what had happened they made an offer to settle the action.

Graeme Henderson, for Mr Boruc, said the allegation of sending the explicit messages had been extremely upsetting.

Mr Boruc still had fans in Poland - where he featured in adverts for fast food chain McDonald's - in Scotland, where he played for Celtic, and now in Italy.

He said footballers "outed" for misbehaviour faced being pilloried by rival fans and Mr Boruc's girlfriend was pregnant at the time.

A spokesman for News Group said the company was "considering all our options including legal action in relation to Mr O'Donnell."

The story appeared in Scottish editions of the News of the World only and not in newspapers sold south of the Border.

During his time with Celtic, Mr Boruc was known as the "Holy Goalie" because of his practice of crossing himself before facing penalties.

He represented the club more than 150 times after signing from Legia Warsaw in his native Poland and spent five years at the club.

In 1997 he was nominated as Players' Player of the Year by the Scottish Professional Footballers' Association.
