Preview: John Cale; Edinburgh Picture House 05/10/2012

Promoting his 15th studio album, former Velvet Underground band member John Cale airs songs from his salaciously-titled Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood tomorrow night at the Picture House.

Having collaborated with uber-cool musician/ producer, Danger Mouse, the 70-year-old has opted for a more modern approach on his latter-day output. Expect flecks of hip-hop, scratchy funk, and no shortage of droning viola, either.

Last time the Welshman took centre stage in Edinburgh, was at the Playhouse back in 1993, for the opening night of the Velvet’s European tour reunion.

Cale refers to his new tunes as ‘enticing’ and somewhat strangely, like looking at a collection of stones. You, however, can make up your own mind.

Just don’t bring any live chickens with you. Cale infamously killed a hen live onstage many moons ago. It couldn’t possibly happen again - could it?
