Poets singer dies aged 69

A SINGER with one of Scotland’s most popular groups in the Sixties has died after suffering a heart attack as he drove home from a football match.

George Gallacher, 69, lead singer of psychedelic Sixties band The Poets, was on his way home from watching the team he supported, Partick Thistle, at Firhill stadium in Glasgow, at the weekend. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anne, and two sons Craig and Fraser.

The Poets were managed by Rolling Stones boss Andrew Oldham. Their most successful songs included That’s The Way It’s Got To Be and Now We’re Thru, which reached the UK charts in 1964.
