Penfold live on the dangerous side

“WE named ourselves after the cartoon character in Dangermouse,” says Penfold bassist Calum Sked. “We went through loads of different band names but none suited us.”

The Livingston four-piece - comprising Sked, Thomas Fraser (vocals), Calum More (guitar), Liam Innes (drums) - formed just nine months ago, but in that short time they’ve built up an enviable live reputation.

Influenced by the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys and Biffy Clyro, the words Penfold use to describe their sound are ‘alternative’, ‘melodic’ and ‘hard-hitting’. “But it’s also quite catchy,” adds Sked. “It’s not too hard and it’s got a good beat behind it.”

Each of the four lads in the band has a day job, but their ultimate ambition is to get to the stage where they can make music full-time.

“I guess everyone in the band would love that,” confirms Sked, “but we’re just focusing on getting a solid backing behind us at the moment and maybe go on a tour of Scotland at the end of the summer.

“We’re especially hoping to get a good backing in Scotland - and I can definitely see us slotting into the music scene here.”

Penfold launch debut EP Hindsight and Regrets at Bannerman’s tonight - and they can’t wait to unleash their newbie to a Capital crowd.

“We’re really excited,” says Sked. “We asked electro band Lionhall to support and we’re being joined by So Many Animal Calls, who have a great reputation in Glasgow.”
