Interview: Tom Fairnie, singer-songwriter

Occupation: AV/IT projects manager in the University of Edinburgh/singer-songwriter.

What school did you attend? Musselburgh Grammar.

What sort of pupil were you? Creative but almost invisible.

Were your school days the best days of your life? No. I was bullied on occasion and always felt a bit at odds with the system.

What was your first job? TV engineer with British Relay.

My biggest achievement so far has been... Finding my beautiful wife, Jane, bringing up our children, becoming a grandparent and writing over 120 songs.

Three words that sum up my personality are... Creative, enigmatic and daft.

Three places in Edinburgh I could not live without are... Easter Road stadium, Vittoria on Leith Walk and The Bow Bar on Victoria Street.

If you could bring one show to Edinburgh what would it be? Mark Barnett organised a singer songwriter festival a few years back, and I would really love to see that as a regular event.

Name one item you not live without? My guitar.

By what ethos do you live your life? To do something good; to inspire, to write something profound, to be as altruistic as I can and to love and be loved.
