Robert Burns died aged 37 in 1796 but remains perhaps the most famous Scot ever to have lived, with only legendary medieval warriors like Sir William Wallace or Robert the Bruce able to offer a competing claim.

The Bard of Ayrshire is adored by generations of Russians, was regularly quoted by Abraham Lincoln and his works inspired some of the best known American novelists of the 20th century in John Steinbeck and JD Salinger.
