Glasgow becomes a major centre for contemporary artist’s work

A COLLECTION of “unique and beautiful” works by late French artist Niki de Saint Phalle is to go on display in Glasgow.

The donation of 15 works includes sculptures, a print and wallpaper. It is being gifted to Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) from Eric and Jean Cass who have collected art for more than 30 years and are now breaking it up through the Contemporary Art Society.

Glasgow City Council said the gift will add to two of de Saint Phalle’s sculptures already owned by the city and means Glasgow will have the most significant, publicly held collection of her work in the UK.

The collection will be shown at an exhibition at GoMA, planned for autumn 2013. De Saint Phalle was born in 1930 and first began painting at the age of 20. De Saint Phalle also designed film and stage sets and costumes.
