The Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s new music director, Peter Oundjian, outlined his first programme, ranging from favourites like Carmina Burana or major works by Brahms and Dvorak, to a new focus on American music.

Mr Oundjian takes the helm after a year in which the RSNO has named a new chief executive, a new leader of the orchestra and several new principle musicians. It announced a new principal guest conductor, Denmarks Thomas Sondergard, yesterday.

“There is no limit to the potential of this orchestra,” he said, promising a “new and exciting chapter” in its history. While the orchestra had “beautiful French repertoire” to rely on after seven years under departing French conductor Stephane Deneve, it was “time for a change”, he said. Mr Oundjian, who is holding on to his post as director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the Czech composer Smetana’s epic work Ma Vlast, “My Country”. It will be played with choreographed projections by an award-winning photographer, in a joint commission from the Toronto orchestra.
