Evans has been exploring athletics since his recovery from the severe neck injury in Wales two years ago which cut short his rugby career.

Today’s event was the first time the former Scotland international has raced north of the border.

He is working with coach Margot Wells, the wife of Scottish Olympic gold medallist Allan, and would eventually like to compete in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Miss Brook appeared nervous, covering her face with her hands, as she watched Evans make it to the final of the 60 metres event.

She was joined in the stands by his mother Sally and rugby player brother Max Evans.

His former Glasgow Warriors teammates Al Kellock, Johnnie Beattie and Dougie Hall also attended to show their support.
