Film review: Last Night

Last Night (12A)Directed by: Massy TadjedinStarring: Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Guillaume Canet, Eva Mendes**

LIKE its aesthetically perfect cast and the meticulously designed high-spec world in which the characters they play live, this marital drama is a little too neatly conceived to say anything particularly interesting or insightful about modern relationships.

Keira Knightley and personality vacuum Sam Worthington star as Joanna and Michael, a married couple with some deep-rooted trust issues who find themselves – rather conveniently – facing the same dilemma when a night apart puts temptation in both their paths.

For real estate broker Michael it comes in the form of flirtatious colleague Laura (Eva Mendes); for freelance writer Joanna it's the arrival in New York of secret old flame Alex (Guillame Canet) on the day Michael has to be out of town on a business trip with Laura.

That writer and debut director Massy Tadjedin has elected to have the red-blooded Aussie tempted by a fiery Latin siren, and the prim English rose tempted by a good-looking Parisian novelist (all the actors essentially play to type) further undermines any surface attempts to present a more complex, adult-oriented drama.
