Edinburgh’s New Year: From candles to clubbing

CANDLELIT CONCERT IN ST GILES’ CATHEDRAL

THIS year, the annual festive extravaganza celebrates the music of Handel and Mozart. Handel’s virtuosic Dixit Dominus is partnered by Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de Confessore, with its famous Laudate Dominum movement.

The famous St Giles’ organ will also be heard in Handel’s Organ Concerto Op 4 No 2 in B flat. The St Giles’ Cathedral Choir, directed by Michael Harris, with the St Giles’ Camerata (leader Angus Ramsay) will also be joined by a stunning array of young soloists.

Not suitable for babies or young children.

OFFICIAL EDINBURGH HOGMANAY AFTER SHOW CLUB

SO the bands have played, the countdown to the Bells has been and gone, and 2012 has well and truly arrived – where better to be than at the HMV Picture House where this year’s Official Club Event of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay will welcome, direct from the Street Party, Mark Ronson.

He won’t be the only one playing out a DJ set as he’ll be joined on the bill by Radio 1 DJs Jaymo and Andy George.

Club night Xplicit has teamed up with Edinburgh’s Hogmanay to bring you Grammy and Brit Award-winning DJ/producer and all-round music guru Ronson and massive d‘n’b/dance act Sub Focus.

Multi-talented Ronson has dominated the charts over the last few years, working with some of the hottest acts around including the late Amy Winehouse, Adele and Lily Allen and remains one of the world’s most in demand producers. See pages 8 and 9.

Sub Focus is currently one of the biggest dance acts. At the height of his career, he’s best known for dance floor smashers Could This Be Real, Rock It and his current single, Flashing Lights.

Just in case that’s not enough, Jaymo and Andy George will be joining in the fun along with Xplicit’s Eno, One Dollar Dave from Discopolis and Vincent Vega of Sugarbeat.
