DJ Tom Loud snubs Sydney for Edinburgh Hogmanay

Hogmanay organisers have struck a deal with iconic Australian DJ Tom Loud to ditch Australia’s biggest New Year’s Eve party and ring in 2015 in the Scottish capital instead.

And with 75,000 midnight revellers expected to pour into the city’s streets, the 35-year-old Aussie will be gearing up to play his biggest crowd ever. Beaming down onto the streets via dozens of huge screens, the experimental DJ will be offering crowds “the world’s first time-travelling dance party”.

Dubbed the Hot Dub Time Machine, the show will take Hogmanay celebrations on a journey through time, starting with hits from the 1950s before reaching 2014’s biggest anthems by the time the clock strikes midnight.

Presented in strict chronological order, each song is accompanied by visuals on massive screens which are mixed and mashed-up live on the entertainer’s turntables.

His show has sold more than 30,000 tickets at the Edinburgh, Adelaide and Sydney festivals, and shared stages with the likes of Chaka Khan and the Roots.

And, according to Hogmanay director Pete Irvine, the show will take Edinburgh’s New Year party to a whole new level.

“DJ Tom Loud has always played Sydney’s New Year’s party – which, after Edinburgh, is probably the biggest in the world,” he said. “Now we’ve nicked him for ourselves, and he’s going to be playing his biggest ever crowd at Scotland’s biggest ever dance party.

“It’s such a great experience on such a large scale. This is going to be the best party on the planet.”

DJ Tom Loud, real name Lowndes, is already a Fringe favourite. For two years, he’s brought a small-scale preview of his Hogmanay bash to the Capital’s iconic summer festival – and organisers say he sells out faster than any other act. Prior to his Hogmanay debut, the Aussie spin artist will be warming up with a set of December gigs in St Andrew’s Square.

Chart-topping pop singer Lily Allen will be headlining the Hogmanay Concert in West Princes Street Gardens.

Indie rockers Twin Atlantic and folk favourite Eddie Reader are also on the bill.
