Castle artwork fetches record price at auction

A RECENTLY rediscovered painting of Edinburgh Castle from Princes Street by Samuel Bough has set a world record price for the artist at
auction.

The huge canvas – it is more than five feet high – was sold for £109,250 at Bonhams Scottish Sale in Edinburgh. The previous highest price was £42,000, achieved in 2004.

The artwork, pictured right, was painted in the early 1860s by the Carlisle-born Bough, who was known as Sam, who, after a career as a theatre scene painter, settled in Scotland in 1855.

Edinburgh Castle from Princes Street had been in the same family since its purchase and had almost certainly never been exhibited.

Bonhams’ head of pictures in Scotland, Chris Brickley, said: “This is a marvellous painting and I am not surprised it has fetched such a large sum.”
