Big Fish Little Fish, the family-friendly rave, comes to Edinburgh

But since launching in London in 2013, it’s proved a huge hit with dancers of all ages – and now it’s heading to Edinburgh for the first time later this spring.

La Belle Angele will invite families to dance the afternoon away on March 12 to dance music – and not just any old rubbish, but “banging acid house” – BFLF regular DJ, Joe Muggs, testifies – disco, electro, and much more.

A theme for the day has been set as “We Could Be Heroes” – families are open to interpret this in any way they’d like, but it’s safe to say David Bowie will figure highly.

The family rave allows the whole family to dance and have fun

Founder Hannah Saunders said the idea came around after she had young children, and the regular parent and child groups didn’t have what she was looking for.

“After I’d had young children, I didn’t continue with my career. I enjoyed music and lively people but I found that the children’s groups didn’t do it for me. I decided to create something I’d enjoy taking my family to.”

And so Big Fish Little Fish was created.

“We were getting emails from local residents in Edinburgh asking would we ever bring the event north of the border - as well as some of my friends in Scotland who were constantly asking me to bring it there.”

The event is for children aged zero to eight, encouraging all family members to join in.

The family rave has a multisensory dance floor with top DJs playing electronic music tailored for the adults as much as their children. Bubble machines, glitter cannons, club visuals and a giant parachute dance will also keep the kids busy.

And pop-up stalls with facepainting, photo booths, temporary tattoos and cakes will offer opportunities to take a break from the madness of the dancefloor.

There will also be a chillout and play area for babies – complete with tents, tunnels, soft mats and a mini ball pit – and on top of all this, a bar for mum and dad.

“The children all have a good time, and it allows the adults to relax and have fun - because if your kids aren’t having fun neither are you.

“The events took off pretty rapidly, just becoming a massive success. They’re attended by shed loads of people who want to have fun, who just get it and want to join in.”
