Band of brothers lead The Field

Sunderland siblings Peter and David Brewis, aka Field Music, draw on influences as wide-ranging as Stravinsky, Stax R&B, Fleetwood Mac, Serge Gainsbourg, Thelonious Monk and Kate Bush.

So far they have released three acclaimed albums, but in the Capital on Monday they’ll play largely from soon-to-be-released fourth effort Plumb.

The new album is another change of direction for the dazzlingly inventive duo - and that’s partly down to a change of environment.

As a year-long touring schedule wound down after the release of their third album, the Brewis brothers were faced with the ending of an era - the community building which had housed the studio/rehearsal space they’d shared with The Futureheads for a decade closed its doors.

The boys set to work immediately at building a new recording space on the banks of the River Wear in Sunderland - and that’s had a big affect on the new album.

“Mostly, though, we were desperate to be in the studio after a lot of touring,” says David.

Playing a set of new songs can be a tough gig, but Field Music won’t be waiting around to gauge audience reaction.

“We perform the songs a lot like they sound on record and, as we tend not to leave lots of gaps, we don’t have any embarrassing pauses where we’re standing about waiting for people to clap,” says David. “And just in case they don’t, we’ll whizz from one song to the next really quickly.”
