West Lothian pizza firm Ooni announces topping-up of salaries

Broxburn-based Ooni Pizza Ovens – which calls itself the world leader in its field – is upping its minimum entry-level salary for employees to £25,000.

Ooni – which also claims to be one of the UK’s fastest growing companies – says the pay packet is 54 per cent higher than the UK national minimum wage and 45 per cent higher than the Living Wage Foundation’s real living wage.

The decision to increase the entry salary – as well as give all staff a 10 per cent raise – was made at the start of 2021.

The business was launched in 2012 by husband-and-wife duo Kristian Tapaninaho and Darina Garland, offering a small, fast and accessible wood-fired pizza oven letting people make “great” pizza at home. It now has a full range of ovens and tools, with offices in the US, Germany and China as well as Scotland – and has featured on Ellen DeGeneres’ The Ellen Show.

Chief experience officer Ms Garland said: “Our employees are crucial to the success of our business and our dynamic team deserves to be empowered and know that what they do nine to five, Monday to Friday, is helping to make the world just a little bit better – one slice at a time. Now with around 120 employees, work culture is still at the very core of our business growth plan.”

Chief financial officer Andrew Brown deemed the minimum salary increase “a simple, bold, progressive and empowering step to oppose unjust wage gaps and recognise that our people are our business and our success”.
