Waitrose deal helps Scotty Brand’s Chippy Chips break through £1 million sales mark

Sales of Scotty Brand’s Chippy Chips are poised to break through the £1 million mark after the Albert Bartlett-owned brand sunk its teeth into a deal with Waitrose.

The frozen chips went on sale this week at all six of the upmarket grocer’s Scottish branches, adding to existing listings at Asda, the Co-op, Morrisons and Tesco.

The “irregular-cut” chips in sunflower oil are made with homegrown potatoes sourced from Scotty’s network of growers throughout Scotland, and sold in 1.5kg bags.

Chippy Chips were the first frozen chips to be produced from only homegrown Scottish potatoes when they made their debut at the Co-op in 2016. Previous Scotty Brand listings at John Lewis-owned Waitrose have included potatoes and soup mixes.

Richard Allison, commercial director at Scotty Brand, said: “We’ve been blown away by the popularity of our Chippy Chips.

“The growing popularity has led to us securing this exciting listing with Waitrose, and we are looking forward to more customers discovering our homegrown Scottish chips.”

Last July, Scotty Brand added cherries to its range with a contract to supply Asda’s Scottish stores. A month earlier, the company’s strawberries went UK-wide through a deal covering 200 of Asda’s shops.

Scotty Brand was launched in 1948 by potato giant Albert Bartlett. It offers seasonal produce such as potatoes, Ayrshire new potatoes and berries; and other products including prepared vegetables, fresh soup, sausage rolls, smoked salmon, chilled coleslaws and potato salad.

In December, Scotty Brand hailed its part in protecting the planet after saving almost 27 tonnes of plastic in the last year.

The savings are part of a wider initiative with parent company Albert Bartlett introducing reduced thickness, recyclable bags in a move which has seen a saving of 92 tonnes of plastic across the business.

Since the start of September 2019, Scotty Brand has introduced a raft of plastic-saving measures across its range in a bid to help protect the environment. These include using thinner, recyclable plastic on its 2kg potato bags, baby potato bags and chippy chip packs and removing trays inside its baking potato packs.
