'Two points dropped' - How Austria players and media reacted to Scotland draw

Austria felt it was two points dropped against Scotland.

John McGinn produced a stunning moment to earn the draw with an overhead kick. It was the second time Steve Clarke's had come back in the match.

For Austria it has been viewed as two points dropped with newspaper Der Standard stating qualification had started in “slippery fashion".

"At the end of the day it was very much a middling performance against the team ranked 48 in the world," it said.

"Franco Foda was annoyed after the 2-2 draw on Thursday in Scotland about defensive inadequacies in set pieces."

Foda did lament the concession of two goals, noting the “small details”.

“In my view we’ve let two points slip,” he said.

"Above all in our good phases of play, we’ve conceded two goals. When you lead twice away from home, you have to defend better.

"At this level, small details often make the difference. We made one mistake too many, especially in set pieces.”

For players there was similar frustration.

Midfielder Xaver Schlager said it was a game Austria “should win”, while highly-rated Christoph Baumgartner talked about the “bitter feeling" of losing a goal so late on.

Scotland head for Israel in the next qualifier, while Austria host Faroe Islands.

Already both sides are ruing the dropping of points with Denmark topping the group after the first round of fixtures after they defeated Israel.

After this international break, the qualifying campaign will pick up after the Euros.
