Young hat-trick propels Gala to the top

Winger Gavin Young led the way with a hat-trick of tries as Gala disposed of Peebles in the RBS Border Regional Cup on Saturday. The Netherdale side scored seven tries in a 41-3 home victory and now sit top of the Border pool with two wins from two.

Young opened the scoring inside the first five minutes before the visitors clawed things back to 5-3. The encounter was full of mistakes at this time, but Gala managed to get into their stride and score three good tries before the interval.

Craig Robertson finished well before scrum-half George Graham and Young went over to make it 22-3 after 40 minutes. The try by Young was set up by a great run by No 8 Tom Weir.

In the second half, Gala put the match to bed, but it was scrappy stuff and coach George Graham will be looking for his charges to tighten up in the coming weeks.

Still, they scored three more tries through Young in the 50th minute, Russell Anderson and Lee Millar. Stand-off Andy McLean and Millar shared the kicking points. Also in the Borders on Saturday, there were wins for Kelso and Selkirk. Greg Minto, Stuart Lowrie, David Lowrie and Lewis Mallin scored tries as Kelso caused an upset by seeing off Hawick 31-25 at Poynder Park.

Hawick’s tries came from Keith Davies (2) and Michael Robertson, but new coach Phil Leck will work hard on defence this week in training after they gave away some soft scores.

Selkirk beat Jed 35-24 at Riverside Park, with Fraser Harkness and Darren Clapperton both grabbing two tries. Youngster Nyle Godsmark got another and all five were converted by Michael McVie. Jed’s tries came from Ewan Scott, Andy McLean and Lewis Young.

Stewart’s Melville’s hopes of progressing from their pool in the RBS Edinburgh Regional Cup were dashed by a home defeat against Biggar. The Hartreemill men put in a great first-half performance to see them lead 17-5 at the break and, although the hosts came back into things, the visitors saw the game out to win 27-19. The result means that whoever wins between Biggar and Watsonians this weekend will progress from pool 3.

Heriot’s were comfortable 38-5 winners at Edinburgh Accies in the first match to be played in pool 1.
