Wright pins his Saltire to the mast for team tourney

The West Linton player is already eligible to represent Wales, where he was born before moving to Edinburgh.

But, having played most of his professional golf in Scotland, he’d prefer to be flying the  Saltire in the event.

“I’d like to represent the  Scottish Region as that’s where I compete,” Wright told the Evening News.

He was speaking after taking route 66 to a share of fourth spot in the Aberdeen Asset Management Northern Open at Meldrum House.

The 30-year-old was pleased with his closing salvo, which saw him finish with a six-under-par total of 274.

But, for the fourth round running, he was left bemoaning the way he played the front nine after finishing six shots behind winner James Byrne.

“It’s been a tournament of two halves really,” said the newly-crowned British Club Pros champion. “I’ve played the back nine well all week but have been completely rubbish on the front nine.”

Dunbar’s Neil Fenwick boosted his hopes of securing a top-three finish on this season’s Tartan Tour Order of Merit.

He closed with a 68 to finish sixth on 275, one ahead of Braid Hills-based Paul McKechnie (69) and two in front of Edinburgh man David Patrick (69).

Duddingston’s James McGhee tied for 12th on 290 while Mark Kerr shot a 75.
