World Cup safety fears played down

Rugby World Cup chiefs are confident of a "safe and enjoyable" tournament taking place in New Zealand next year.

Auckland's Eden Park - venue for nine World Cup games, including both semi-finals and final - was the scene of what New Zealand Prime Minister John Key described as "loutish-type" crowd behaviour that marred Saturday's Four Nations rugby league Test between New Zealand and Australia.

Key confirmed a full security review of events at Eden Park. The match, which Australia won 36-20, was marred by fighting among spectators and bottles being thrown at players.

Scotland will play England there in the World Cup.

"The event management processes will be completely different for RWC 2011," a Rugby World Cup spokesperson said.

"There will be different crowd, stadia and alcohol management structures. We have requested a review, but we are confident that the appropriate structures are being implemented to ensure that next year's tournament will be as safe and enjoyable for domestic and international fans as previous tournaments."
