Wimbledon: Andy Murray’s clash with David Ferrer halted by rain

ANDY Murray has once again been delayed by rain as he bids to make it into the last four at Wimbledon.

The Scot is currently leading David Ferrer by two sets to one, with the fourth set tied at 5-5. Rain halted play just before seven o’clock, but the roof will not be closed as the shower is expected to be brief.

Ferrer took the first set on a tie-break 7-5, but Murray roared back to win the second set 7-6, and the 3rd set 6-4. with just under three hours played.

Commenting on what has been an engrossing match so far, John McEnroe said: “There are occasions when we are so fortunate to be in this commentary booth watching this kind of athleticism.”

Elsewhere at Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are set to meet in the semi-finals, after winning their respective matches with ease. Defending champion Djokovic breezed past Florian Mayer 6-4 6-1 6-4 in an hour and 44 minutes, whilst six-time champion Federer defeated Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny 6-1 6-2 6-2 in just over 90 minutes, showing no sign of the back injury that had troubled him in his victory over Xavier Malisse in the fourth round.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, however, made heavy work of his match with 27th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber, eventually defeating him 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-2, to reach his second Wimbledon semi-final. Tsonga racked up 17 aces and 43 winners in a draining match that lasted two hours and 28 minutes. The 5th seed will face either Andy Murray or David Ferrer in the last four, and commented: “I’m so happy I have a second chance in a semi-final at Wimbledon. It was difficult. Philipp played well, he served well, he was better than me on the baseline, he was very aggressive. But I’m through and I’m happy.”

As of 7.25pm, the match between Murray and Ferrer had just restarted on Centre Court, with Murray aiming to take the fourth set.
