Whitecraigs edge Hawks on try count to reach West final

Whitecraigs made it to the final of the RBS West Cup on try count over Glasgow Hawks after a tense and feisty 29-29 draw at Old Anniesland.

The sides were locked at 26-26 after 80 minutes, and the stalemate persisted after 20 additional minutes, meaning the visitors progressed by virtue of having scored four tries to three.

Winger Kerr Grossman notched a double for Hawks, Tom Steven getting their third try but touchdowns by Ben Blamire, Steven Whittet, Hamish Hunter and Ally Stevenson ensured it was the lower division side who went trhrough after extra time.

John Willis led the Ayr try charge as they snuffed out the brave challenge of Dumfries 31-6 at Park Farm. Cammy Taylor, Pa Thomson and Andy Wilson also broke through for the visitors, Wilson adding three conversions. Tom Hiddleston found the target twice for the hosts.

Heriot’s booked their place in the final of the RBS Edinburgh Regional Cup when they produced a performance brimming with character to oust Currie 26-12 at Goldenacre.

OJ Brown, Jason Hill and – with a vital late score – Graham Wilson scored touchdowns for the hosts, Mike Entwhistle notching a try double for Currie.

There was also a try double for Keith Buchan to help Boroughmuir dump Biggar 35-7 at Meggetland, while, in the north, Will Wardlaw went over twice to inspire Aberdeen GSFP’s 48-27 win against his old team Howe of Fife at Duffus Park.

Dundee ensured an all north-east Caledonian Cup final when they booked their place against Aberdeen on Saturday evening with a hard-fought 14-13 win over Stirling County under the floodlights at Bridgehaugh.

The result brought County’s recent resurgence to a halt but contests between these two are rarely dull, and this outcome was difficult to predict until right to the close. In the end, tries from Cammy Wyper and Andy Dymock, both converted by Jack Steele, proved enough for the Taysiders, Stuart Edwards scoring for Stirling.
