White keeps options open

JAMES White, this year’s Scottish Order of Merit winner, will be staying in the amateur ranks for another season if he fails to graduate from the European Tour Qualifying School.

Having passed the first stage at Dundonald Links in September, White embarks on the next step of his examination today, when the second phase gets underway in southern Spain.

The 23-year-old Fifer, who is in the field at El Valle, has retained his amateur status and is waiting to see if he can progress to the final stage and then secure a card for either the main Tour or the Challenge Tour.

“I’m in Spain as an amateur and I’m just going to see how I get on,” said White. “The SGU national squad met Colin Montgomerie in St Andrews recently and he was really supportive of that, he felt it was great to be able to do this as an amateur. I’m in a really fortunate position that, if it doesn’t work out for me in Spain, I’m really well looked after by the SGU as an amateur so I can wait again until next year.”
