Weir's goals help Wick dent Deveronvale's title hopes

WICK Academy striker Gary Weir

was inspirational in Saturday's shock 4-3 victory at Deveronvale as the Banff hosts were dealt a major setback in the title race.

Weir, playing behind front men David Allan and Richard MacAdie, lit up Princess Royal Park – scoring the opener and playing a part in two other Wick goals. Yet the Banff club almost snatched a late equaliser when Scott Fraser headed over from six yards in injury time.

Weir scored the opener after 13 minutes with a close-range finish and then saw his 20-yard strike rebound off the underside of the bar for David Allan to head home five minutes later.

In between, Graeme Watt had pulled Vale level and the same player then scored a second equaliser with a fine finish from 14 yards before the interval.

Poor defending saw Wick edge ahead again a minute after the re-start when Sam Mackay scored from the spot.

The 22-year-old Weir was involved in the move that saw Allan net from 18 yards with 66 minutes played but Vale got another goal back after 74 minutes through substitute Steven Gauld to complete the scoring.

Cove stayed a point ahead in pursuit of their third consecutive title after scraping a 3-2 victory at Brora. Martin Johnston's stunning 25-yard strike won it in stoppage time.

Fraserburgh kept up the pressure with a 3-2 win away to lowly Fort William but also left it late before Neil Main clinched victory.

In the Highland League Cup, Forres beat holders Inverurie 4-0, while Lossiemouth sprang a major surprise by beating visitors Buckie 4-3.
