Watsonian bid to defend crown on 125th anniversary

WATSONIAN, the five-times winners, have an added incentive as they set out today in a bid to make a successful defence of the Halford Hewitt title in Kent, writes Martin Dempster.

The holders are celebrating their 125th anniversary this year and so have headed south determined to put up a creditable defence of a crown they secured 12 months ago by beating Malvern in the final for school FPs.

Two members of that winning side are unavailable this time around, Brian Tait due to work commitments and Greg Nicolson due to the fact he has since turned professional and is, therefore, ineligible.

Compensating for those losses, two players with past Halford Hewitt experience, Angus Montgomery and Alan Williams, have been drafted in to the ten-man side, which also includes Brian Bingham, David Crummey, Andrew Hogg, Martin Hopley, Scott James, Richard Johnston and Jamie Kennedy.

The event, involving 64 teams playing foursomes in a knock-out format, is being held at Royal St George’s and Royal Cinque Ports, where Watson’s face Ampleforth in today’s first round.

Fettes, Edinburgh Academy and Glenalmond are also in action at Royal Cinque Ports while Loretto and Merchiston launch their campaigns at neighbouring Sandwich.
