Warriors back schools development

GLASGOW players have helped to launch a new ‘First XV’ initiative that aims to drive the development of rugby through schools across the west of Scotland.

Prop Mike Cusack and Rob Dewey, the international centre, were at St Maurice’s High in Cumbernauld yesterday to welcome the school as one of the inaugural members of the programme, which has so far enrolled 52 schools and clubs.

The groups have each been allocated at least two Warriors players who will regularly drop in over the course of the season to help out with events, provide training tips and spread the word about professional rugby.

The First XV schools and clubs have also been given Warriors marketing material and complimentary season tickets to RaboDirect PRO12 and Heineken Cup matches. Pupils from St Maurice’s, also one of the new ‘Schools of Rugby’ supported by the SRU and the Scottish Government, have already visited Scotstoun Stadium and watched training as well as being treated to meeting Scotland coach Andy Robinson and holding the Heineken Cup.

Dewey said: “The First XV programme is a great way for schools and clubs to establish a meaningful connection with Glasgow Warriors. It’s a fantastic feeling for us players to meet the children and help them with their rugby, then see them enjoying themselves at our games. We take great pride in representing them throughout Europe in the RaboDirect PRO12 and Heineken Cup.”

Clubs and schools interested in joining the First XV programme are encouraged to contact the Glasgow Warriors marketing manager, Nicola Sturgeon, on 0141 435 4361 and [email protected].
