Wallaby Mark Chisholm out of World Cup

Australian lock Mark Chisholm, previously a near certainty for this year's World Cup squad, will be sidelined for the rest of the season by a knee injury he sustained in Super rugby action.

The tall, powerful 29-year-old, who has played 58 tests for his country, ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament after being tackled by Anthony Faingaa in the ACT Brumbies' 22-14 victory over the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Saturday.

"It's devastating, it's absolutely devastating," Chisholm said.

"I'm in shock. The World Cup is up in smoke now. That's a disappointing way to end - especially because of the things I wanted to achieve this year."

The injury means Chisholm has also played his last match for the Brumbies after more than 100 appearances for the team from Australia's capital and he will undergo surgery before joining French club Bayonne for next season.
