Volleyball: City girls excel for Scotland

City of Edinburgh players helped Scotland junior women’s volleyball team scale new heights at the European C Championships in Cospicua, Malta.

Scotland – with six Edinburgh players in their squad – reached the final stages in Cyprus in April by winning two of their three matches.

Scotland clinched their place with a 25-13, 25-18, 25-17 win over Northern Ireland yesterday, a match in which City of Edinburgh Katie Shaw, 14, starting.

Scotland had overwhelmed hosts Malta in straight sets on Saturday 25-16, 25-12, 25-13 and their only loss was in the opening match against favourites Cyprus when they managed to win the third set but eventually lost in four sets.

On the domestic front, the Schelde Sports Scottish League resumed after the winter break with City of Edinburgh maintaining their unbeaten run in the men’s first division beating Edinburgh Jets 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 25-13.

Reigning champions Glasgow Mets kept up the pursuit with an impressive 25-21, 25-17, 25-18 win at Bon Accord.
