Volleyball: City of Edinburgh lift the men’s League title

City of Edinburgh player-coach Barry McGuigan hailed his players after they clinched the Schelde Sports Scottish Volleyball League title for only the second time.

The team had to dig deep to see off Glasgow Mets 25-23,
25-21, 22-25, 27-29, 15-12 at Queensferry High School in their penultimate match.

It took the title out of the reach of Kilmarnock Blaze and spared Edinburgh a title showdown against Blaze.

“We didn’t have a full-strength side, but Mets were great. It really felt like the toughest game of the season and the scoreline depicts that. Our players were drained at the end, but I’m pleased for our guys who bound together through intense pressure,” said McGuigan.

The women’s title will be settled on March 23, with reigning champions City of Edinburgh facing Troon Team Ayrshire. Both sides won at the weekend – Edinburgh beating NUVOC and Troon recovering from losing the first set to beat Aberdonia.

Edinburgh Jets kept up their play-off hopes with a straight-sets win at North Lanarkshire.
