Volleyball: Big test for Edinburgh ‘Invincibles’

The Ayrshire side are also unbeaten and edged the last meeting between the sides in a thrilling Scottish Cup final at Wishaw last May when they won 16-14 in the fifth set.

Troon coach Vince Krawczyk believes the main honours will again be disputed by the big two and insists his side is stronger than last season despite losing key players in the summer.

“Last season, we chopped and changed a lot because we had such a big squad and I don’t think I even knew what my strongest six was,” he said.

But the City of Edinburgh club have swept all before them this season in a run unprecedented in the Scottish game. All six of their teams competing in national competition (men’s a women’s division one, men’s division two, Under-19 boys and Under-16 boys and girls) are unbeaten.

“By my count that’s 22 wins, no losses,” said Barry McGuigan, player-coach of the men’s first team. “We must be doing something right. There are some very tough matches coming up over the next month or so but it’s worth celebrating the success so far and there’s no harm in doing that.”

McGuigan’s men also head to Ayr to face Troon PA as they seek to strengthen their grip at the top of the league.
