Villarreal edge closer to Champions League berth

VILLARREAL kept up their chase for a Champions League place by rallying for a 2-1 victory at Racing Santander yesterday.

Sergio Canales put Santander ahead in the 39th minute. Villarreal's Diego Godin hit back with a 70th-minute volley before Nilmar clinched victory with a goal in the 83rd minute.

Villarreal moved within four points of fourth-place Mallorca, who scored a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Malaga. Luis Garcia's 55th-minute goal led Espanyol to a 1-0 win over Almeria and Valladolid won 2-0 at Sporting Gijon.
