U18s claim hat-trick of victories over Wales

SCOTLAND'S Under-18 boys squad scored a hat-trick of narrow wins over Wales at Inverclyde .

In the opening contest, Stewart Coghlan set up Stepps striker Niall McLeod for the only goal of the game five minutes from time.

A first-half hat-trick of penalty corners from Watsonians' Fraser Sands saw the Scots youngsters gain a 3-1 half-time lead but Wales pulled it back to 3-3. With nine minutes left, Hillhead's Ali Stewart fired in the winning goal.

The final contest was decided by an overtime penalty corner conversion by Greaves Clydesdale's Ben Peterson to give the Scots a late 3-2 win. Peterson scored his first goal from open play in five minutes but the Welsh retaliated to go into a 2-1 lead just after the interval. With 13 minutes remaining Hillhead's Tom Kemsley equalised which prepared the way for Peterson's late winner.

The under-18 girls opened brightly with a 6-1 whipping of Wales, Sarah Robertson of Borders Fjordhus scored twice while the CALA Edinburgh quartet of Alex Wilson, Kendall Stewart, Nicki Mollison and Heather Elder got the others. Wales won the second game 3-0. The girls finished their programme with a 2-2 draw. The Scots twice went ahead through Heather Elder and Robyn Collins but Wales fought back.

In Wrexham, Scotland's under-16 girls recorded three straight wins over their hosts. In the opener, Giffnock's Lucy Lanigan scored twice in a 5-1 thumping of Wales, the other goals came from Hannah Pike (Bolton), Kike Lawal (St George's) and Clare Laverty (Inverleith). Laverty was the catalyst with two goals in a 4-1 scoreline in the second game. Her Inverleith team-mate Laura Page and Hillhead's Emily Moran also scored. The final encounter ended 2-0 with Moran and CALA Edinburgh's Lucy Preston scoring.

The under-16 boys lost the first two matches 2-0 and 3-2, Ayr's George Adams and Hamish Imrie from Grange getting the goals in the latter contest. However, the Scots youngsters did recover some pride when Adams scored twice in a 2-1 victory over Wales.
