Two wins to secure title but Smith says it's not over yet

WALTER SMITH admits the finishing line is in sight now with Rangers needing just two more wins to secure a second successive Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League championship.

A 3-1 win against Aberdeen at Ibrox last night propelled the Scottish champions 13 points clear at the summit with just six games of the campaign remaining.

That means they could potentially wrap up the title race in the first game after the SPL split if they can take maximum points from Dundee United at Tannadice next midweek.

"All I would say is that it's a really good position to be in and any of the teams in the league would like to be in our own position," said Smith.

"I know it's boring to say but we have to just take the games on an individual basis now. We have a game at Tannadice next week, which has been a tough ground to get a win at.

"We have a break of a week now and it's the first time in a while we have had that luxury and hopefully it will help us in terms of freshness next Wednesday."

Goals from Steven Davis, Kyle Lafferty and Kenny Miller sealed the win against the Dons, who briefly had aspirations of a comeback when Darren Mackie pulled a goal back.

Davis was deservedly voted the supporters' man of the match for another impressive display, which saw him grab the opener with a superb strike before playing a part in the other two goals.

But it was Lafferty who stole the headlines with his first goal since December – and only his third of the season – after a surprise inclusion in the starting line-up, with Kris Boyd left on the bench.

Smith now wants to see more consistency from the Northern Ireland internationalist, who has shown flashes of inspiration but has yet to fully live up to his potential.

"He is one of those boys who has an erratic aspect to his play but there are also some good parts as well," he said.

"We are hopeful that the erratic aspects will settle down. If you look at the goals he scored previously prior to this season, playing wide on the left, his level of goals for a winger has been excellent.

"This season has not been so clever, so it was a welcome goal."

Aberdeen boss Mark McGhee felt the performance at Ibrox was an improvement after suffering defeat to SPL strugglers Kilmarnock at the weekend.

But he is well aware that his side are no farther away from the danger zone after their efforts in Glasgow and admits the cushion they have over rock-bottom Falkirk at the moment is not one he is happy with.

"We are not comfortable yet with a nine-point lead over Falkirk and that's something that has to be addressed," said McGhee.

"We have to get more daylight between us and them and our game against St Johnstone at the weekend is a more important game for us than this one."
