Having won a bumper, he should be unbeaten over timber but has fallen on his past two starts. On his penultimate outing he was still on the bridle in fourth and going best when coming down, while last time out he was well clear when he fell at the last. If those mishaps have not shattered his confidence, he is the one to beat.

An improvement in the weather meant a planned inspection could be called off and the seven-race Dawn Homes Monkton Raceday goes ahead as planned

Eight runners go to post in the Villafield Novices’ Handicap Chase over two miles four furlongs, with Milnathort trainer Lucinda Russell saddling Kilbree Chief with Peter Buchanan taking the mount. Nicky Richards send Un Noble from his Penrith base with Craig Nichol riding.

Recent course winner Willie Hall, trained by Lisa Harrison, goes for a quick double in the Burngreen Brae Handicap Chase and has the help of Callum Bewley in the saddle.

Footlight is not one of the stars at Richard Fahey’s Musley Bank Stables but she can break her duck in the 32Red.com Handicap at Southwell. She showed very little on her first two starts at Kempton but there was a sign of something better to come on her third outing at Wolverhampton. That allowed her to make her handicap debut off a mark of 55 at Lingfield recently and she showed she will be competitive in such races by finishing third to Timia. She was stepped up to seven furlongs for the first time there, but because of the pedestrian early gallop she was unable to make much inroads from the rear. In a bigger field the hope is that the pace will be stronger and the Showcasing filly should go close.

Fahey also looks to hold claims with Miss Goldsmith in the Bet & Watch Every Race At Unibet Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.

The daughter of Mastercraftsman has progressed steadily in three runs at Wolverhampton, suggesting there is a race of this nature within her compass. She has more scope to improve than the others to have race but the Marco Botti newcomer Xceedingly Xcited could be anything.

Nigel Tinkler’s Thello has a good chance of registering a hat-trick in the Download The Ladbrokes App Handicap. The lightly raced four-year-old was no great shakes on the turf in the summer but opened his account at this track in December off the very low mark of 46. Sent off favourite earlier this month to follow up at Chelmsford in a better race, he won quite cosily and was much more value than for the winning distance of half a length. He is now 10lb higher than for that first win but is obviously progressing and can go in again.
