Thrilling win takes Leicester third

Leicester moved up to third in the Aviva Premiership by winning a thrilling encounter 41-32 against London Irish at Madejski Stadium yesterday.

Irish looked on target to record a famous victory when they led 32-31 with two minutes to go but stand-off Toby Flood’s penalty and a Tom Croft try from the last movement of the game proved heartbreaking for the hosts.

Flood scored 26 points for Leicester with Tom Homer replying with 24 for Irish.

Leicester’s director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “We played some good stuff but also some horrendous stuff.

“We soaked up early pressure and then I thought we were going to take control, but we were too inaccurate against a side who have the pace and power to punish you.”

Victory takes Leicester above their East Midland rivals Northampton Saints and four points behind second-placed Saracens. Harlequins remain three clear at the top.
