Third Division: Two in play-offs for first time

Albion Rovers and Annan Athletic secured a place in the end-of-season play-offs for the first time at the weekend. The Coatbridge side defeated Stranraer 1-0 with the Galabankies, in only their third season as a SFL club, earning their place by humbling visiting champions Arbroath 3-0.

Scott Chaplain scored the winner for Rovers on the hour mark, curling the ball home after good work from Robert Love and Steven Lawless. Cliftonhill boss Paul Martin said: "We are over the finishing line and I could not be happier. We are not a fashionable club by any means but getting to the play-offs will be a boost for underdogs everywhere."

Annan chose the right time to put on their best display of the season to beat the title winners to secure at least third spot. Sean O'Connor shot home midway through the first half and then grabbed another goal 20 minutes into the second period before Steven Sloan added the icing to the cake with a headed third. Manager Harry Cairney said: "The target was to get into the play-offs and we have done that with a game to spare with a win over the league leaders in front of our own fans, so it has been a pretty good day."

Queen's Park moved into fourth spot, defeating hosts Clyde 2-0 with Jamie Longworth's header and Martin McBride's shot winning the points. Elgin came from two down to defeat visitors Berwick Rangers 3-2 to end a seven-game run without a win and secure seventh spot in the table. Paul Currie fired the Borderers in front and he then headed in a second before Jason Crooks' penalty reduced the deficit before half-time. Neil MacDonald levelled the scores shortly into the second-half and Paul Kaczan crashed home the winner with 11 minutes left.

Montrose ensured that they would not finish bottom of the SFL by seeing off East Stirlingshire 3-0 at Links Park. The game was dead and buried after 17 minutes when Sean Pierce netted either side of a Daryl Nicol penalty, sending Shire back to the foot of the table.
