Evonne Goolagong Cawley, one of the few women to win a Grand Slam singles title as a mother in the Open Era, is a grandmother.

Goolagong Cawley and husband, Roger Cawley, were at Nambour Hospital north of Brisbane yesterday when their son Morgan’s fiancee, Sophia, gave birth to daughter Beau Maya, the first grandchild for the seven-times Grand Slam champion. “I used to say during my career that the biggest gift was having my children,” Goolagong Cawley said. “But this is better than any trophy.”
