Tennis: Mixed results for Baltacha and Murray

BRITISH No.1 Elena Baltacha went down to a 6-2, 6-2 defeat today against Ioana Raluca Olaru in the first round of the ASB Classic in Auckland.

The 26-year-old Scot had come through qualifying by defeating Canada's Stephanie Dubois but she was no match for her Romanian opponent who is ranked just 12 places ahead of the Briton at world No.72.

Although Baltacha had more success with her first serve, she was unable to convert that into winning points. She had little joy on her return of serve and was comprehensively outplayed by Olaru.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray revealed he would like the chance to play mixed doubles with Laura Robson at the 2012 Olympics in London after playing alongside the talented teenager at the Hopman Cup in Perth yesterday.

Murray admitted his ambition after he teamed up with the 15-year-old to help Great Britain claim a closely-fought 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan in their opening tie at the mixed teams event.

The pair had never played, or even trained, alongside each other until they stepped on court at the Burswood Dome yesterday to play their mixed doubles rubber with the tie level at a match apiece.

Despite that, their partnership brought immediate rewards as they edged a tense battle against Andrey Golubev and Yaroslava Svedona 6-2, 5-7, (12-10) in a third-set tiebreaker.

"I'll play mixed (at the Olympics] for sure. I'd definitely play if Laura's up for it," said Murray who has seldom played the discipline.

Certainly Murray and Robson have built up a rapport on and off the court to suggest they could forge a more regular partnership in the discipline ahead of their home Olympics.

The duo joked with each other during the mixed doubles and post-match press conference with Murray revealing his playing partner had told him he needed to moisturise his hands during the opening set of the decisive rubber. "It was around about 5-0 in the first set she asked me if I moisturise my hands," he revealed. "I was thinking she wasn't taking this too seriously."

At that point Robson interjected: "Have you seen his hands? They are pretty disgusting. It was a good question I thought."
