Syme canters to Lawrie Jug win

GOLF: Scottish Schools champion Connor Syme (Dumfries High School) scored another significant success at the weekend, winning the Paul Lawrie Foundation Junior Jug at Elgin by an impressive seven-shot margin.

The son of Dumfries and County professional, Stuart, shot rounds of 67, 69 and 70 in the 54-hole event. Troon’s David Wilson was runner-up.

Last weekend, Connor teamed up with Dumfries High School team-mate Rachel Walker to win the Scottish mixed foursomes title at Dunblane and next Monday he will be playing for Scotland in the annual schools’ match versus England at Hesketh.

“I played three really solid rounds and the trophy was a replica of the Open Championship Claret Jug, which is really awesome,” said the sixth-year pupil.

“Now I’m looking forward to playing for Scotland next week. After I’ve finished school I am thinking of going to America. It seems to be the way for Scottish golfers.”
