Swimming: Smith's silver lining in pool

WARRENDER'S Lewis Smith was involved in the most exciting race of the fourth day of the British Gas Scottish Championships and was inside the Commonwealth Games qualifying time for the 400m individual medley at Glasgow's Tollcross Leisure Centre.

But he couldn't quite snatch gold – and his second place behind Welshman Thomas Haffield suggested they can both look forward to another duel at the Games in Delhi in October.

Haffield eventually touched first in a fast 4:20.54, with Smith taking the silver in 4:21.74 but there was disappointment for Edinburgh University's William Purnell, who led at the final turn but finished third and just missed the Commonwealth time of 4:22.43.

Edinburgh University's Louise Pate was another to suffer a body blow despite winning the 100m butterfly.

The 21-year-old had a tough race against Bath's Hayley Towner and battled hard to take the gold in 1:00.53. But the huge disappointment was that her time was just under a second outside the mark needed to make sure of selection for Delhi.

Edinburgh's Kris Gilchrist, who won the 100m breaststroke on Thursday and has already qualified for the Games in two events, was second fastest qualifier in the 50m breaststroke.

The Paris-based 26-year-old cruised to a time of 29secs and will go into tonight's final as second fastest behind Dundee's Ross Clark, who posted 28.98.

Double Olympic champ Rebecca Adlington and City of Glasgow's Robbie Renwick both claimed freestyle titles.

Adlington, 21, snatched her second title of the week in the 800m in 8:35.76.

Renwick claimed his first title of the week with a time of 50.67, just holding off England's Craig Gibbons (51.03) with Stirling teenager Jak Scott in bronze position in 51.08.
