Swimming: Renwick rings up another Olympic qualifying result in British champs

City OF GLASGOW’S Robbie Renwick can look forward to an Olympic double in London this summer when he added victory in the 200m freestyle to his Saturday win in the 400m freestyle at the British Gas British Championships at the new London Aquatics Centre.

The 23-year-old won in 1:47.33 and qualified for both the individual event and the relay. But Stirling’s Jak Scott, fifth in 1:48.61, and Aberdonian David Carry, sixth in 1:49.20, both missed out. In the 100m backstroke final, Warrender’s Craig McNally finished fifth in 55.22. Liam Tancock, the world 50m champion, claimed the gold in 53.16.

The Edinburgh University pair of Kerry Buchan and Corrie Scott made the final of the 100m breaststroke, but both missed out on the podium. Kate Haywood won in 1:08.07, with Buchan fifth in 1:10.01 and Scott eighth in 1:10.81.

In the semi-finals, Hannah Miley, already a qualifier in the 400m individual medley, cruised through in the 200m event, while fellow-Scot Caitlin McClatchey was quickest in the 200m freestyle on 1:57.45.

Warrender’s Lewis Smith scraped into the final of the 200m butterfly after a 2:00.10 swim in the semi- final, but and his clubmate, Dan Wallace, failed to advance past the penultimate round.
