The 27-year-old, who trains with Bath and with Edinburgh University, won the 100 metre breaststroke in 1:00.99 and will join fellow-Scot Michael Jamieson in the team for China.

"It's great to make the world team, especially as it will be the last major event before the London 2012 Olympics," said Gilchrist, who made his Olympic debut in Beijing.

City of Glasgow's Robbie Renwick and Aberdonian David Carry also secured places at the World Championships when they led a Scottish clean sweep of the medals in the 400m freestyle.

Renwick, the Commonwealth Games 200m freestyle champion, took the gold in 3:48.60 and Carry made it a terrific double by touching in 3:49.42, also good enough for China.

Warrender's Lewis Smith, the fastest qualifier form the heats but better known as a 400m medley man, completed a tartan trio on the podium by snatching the bronze medal in 3:52.27.

In the women's 200m freestyle, Scotland's Caitlin McClatchey boosted her chances of gaining relay selection at the World Championships by taking the silver medal behind England's Jo Jackson.

Garioch's Hannah Miley, who has already qualified for the World Championships in the two medley events, also made her bid for a relay place by taking fourth place in 1:59.34.

Craig McNally (Warrender) claimed a bronze in the 50m backstroke, won by Loughborough's world champion, Liam Tancock in 25.05. Luke Wood (Loughborough) was second in 26.06 with the Edinburgh 19-year-old third in 26.10.

Iain Macmillan (Edinburgh University) was the fastest in the heats in the 200m butterfly, and won silver in the final, a second behind the experienced Michael Rock's 1:57.25.

Kathryn Johnstone (Edinburgh University) completed the Scottish medal tally by winning silver in the 50m breaststroke in 32.27 behind Anastasia Christoforou (32.04).
