Swimming: Jamieson out to have a gas in Glasgow

Michael JAMIESON, the former City of Edinburgh swimmer, warms up for the Word Championships in Shanghai next month by competing in today's Scottish Gas National Championships in Glasgow.

Another three Scots heading for the World Championships in China next month - Hannah Miley, Robbie Renwick and Jak Scott - are also in a line-up that includes England's double Olympic Champion Rebecca Adlington.

Edinburgh's Kris Gilchrist, winner of the 100 metres and 200m breaststroke at this month's ASA National Championships in Sheffield, has decided to miss the event before joining the GB squad for a training camp in Japan in two weeks' time.

Jamieson, who now trains with Gilchrist in Bath, has set his sights on a breaststroke medal in Shanghai and the Glasgow-born swimmer lines up in the 200m event in today's opening session.

Miley is Scotland's top medal hope for the World in Shanghai - and the European and Commonwealth Games Champion is set to take on Spain's world No.?1 Mireia Belmonte in the 400m medley. "I has some hard training in Stirling last week and it's all about being ready for Shanghai and then the London Olympics next year," said Miley, who is coached by her father, Patrick. "But I wanted to swim in Glasgow because I always enjoy competing in front of a home crowd. Hopefully, it will be a good send-off."

City of Glasgow's Renwick, the Commonwealth 200m freestyle champion, hit form to capture two gold medals at the ASA National Championships in Sheffield two weeks ago. And teenager Scott, in the freestyle relay team, is a newcomer to major championships and the Stirling youngster hopes the World Championships in Shanghai will be a stepping stone to the Olympics.
