Swimming: Five championship wins for Armstrong

Kirsty Armstrong (Kelso High School) and Tain Bruce (Inverkeithing High School) were among the stand-out competitors at the Scottish Gas National Age Group Championships at Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool.

Kirsty won five titles in the 13 years section – the 200m and 400m individual medley, 200m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and the 100m butterfly. In the ’fly, she set a Scottish age group record of 1:04.54.

“I started swimming when I was about five and now I train with BEST (Borders Elite Swim Team),” said the 13-year-old. “We train at lots of pools in the Borders – Galashiels, Selkirk and Kelso – and the coaches are Alex Gordon and Caroline Brown.”

“It is a great squad and my goal this year is to get into the National gold squad,” said Kirsty.

Tain claimed four golds in the 14 years section – the two medleys, 200m backstroke and 100m butterfly – and she helped the Carnegie Club win the overall team trophy.

“I moved to Carnegie last August and it is working really well,” said Tain, who competed for Scotland at last year’s UK School Games. “I want to be the best that I can be in swimming. Inverkeithing High is very supportive of everything I do and it would be great to make the School Games team again.”
