‘Strong’ Fife team set for Area title defence

OF the whole host of successes recorded by Fife golfers, both men and women, last year, one proved particularly satisfying for some long-suffering followers of the game in the Kingdom.

It was a first-ever victory in the 34-year history of the Scottish Area Team Championship, the delight on the faces of stalwarts such as Bill Dickson and David Moir being one of the highlights of the season after watching their men beat defending champions North-East in the final.

Today Fife launch their defence of that title at Blairgowrie, where Brian Soutar, James White, Scott Crichton and Scott Stewart-Cation retain their places from last year but have Colin Martin and Alister Hain for company instead of Kevin Blyth and Peter Latimer.

“It was great to win the title for the first time last year and it really meant a lot to our officials, who do much hard work for the players behind the scenes,” said Soutar, the South African Amateur champion. “We’ve got as strong a side as we had before but there are lots of good teams to beat.”

They include North East, who include three of their 2010 title side, an experienced Renfrewshire team and Lothians, the record 13-times winners but bidding to land the title for the first time under its current format.
