Stand-off Duncan Weir to move to Edinburgh from Glasgow

The SRU confirmed yesterday that Glasgow stand-off Duncan Weir will move to Edinburgh in the summer.

The 24-year-old is Scotland’s second choice No 10 but as he shares a club with national incumbent Finn Russell his starting opportunities have been limited.

Weir made his 100th appearance for the Warriors off the bench in Saturday’s 22-5 European win over Racing 92 at Kilmarnock and the 21-times capped Cambuslang RFC product said: “It’s a new challenge for me and one I’m looking forward to. I feel I’ve improved a lot during my time at Glasgow and I’m looking forward to adding to that at Edinburgh, not only continuing my development but helping the team to improve, too.

“Having played with Glasgow for six years it’s also exciting to be moving to explore Edinburgh and start growing my connection with the city.”

Edinburgh, who crashed out of Europe when they lost their final Challenge Cup pool match in Grenoble on Saturday night, will welcome the addition of an international class performer.

New Zealand-born Phil Burleigh has been their regular stand-off this season but he could move to centre when Scotland’s Matt Scott departs for Gloucester at the end of the season. Capped utility back Greig Tonks has aspirations to play No 10, as too, in the long term, could 19-year-old prospect Blair Kinghorn.

Edinburgh coach Alan Solomons said: “It is a real boost for the club that Duncan has decided to join us.

“He is a quality player who has proven himself at international level. I have no doubt that he will add huge value to the team and I look forward to working with him.”

The Scotland Six Nations squad gathered at St Andrews yesterday, with a hamstring injury scare to centre Alex Dunbar the main concern.
