Sports digest: Inverleith take Edinburgh derby spoils

HOCKEY- Inverleith take Edinburgh derby spoils

A HAT-TRICK from Stephen Dick was the catalyst in Inverleith's 6-3 victory over Grange in the Edinburgh derby at the Subway national indoor league at Perth.

Grove Menzieshill, in search of their eighth consecutive title, sent a shiver down the spine of the chasing pack with the 13-1 demolition of AMN, followed by a 6-3 victory over Greaves Clydesdale.

In the women's league CALA Edinburgh took Milne Craig Western right to the wire only to fall 5-4 in the end. Grove Menzieshill racked up a 10-0 victory over newly promoted Waverley Inveresk Trinity.

BOWLS- Scots men into last four in Hong Kong

Scotland were denied a double semi-final interest in the Hong Kong International Pairs Classic at the KBGC Club in Kowloon yesterday.

Robert Marshall and Iain McLean strolled to a 21-10 win over Australia but Margaret Letham and Lynn Stein were unluckily beaten by world champions Malaysia 16-12. After a must-win 21-10 victory over section leaders New Zealand, slow starters Marshall and McLean repeated that scoreline over the Aussies in the quarter-finals to set up a last-four meeting with Wales today for a place in the final against England or Club De Recreio.

BADMINTON- Bankier and Egelstaff reach finals

Glasgow's Imogen Bankier and England's Chris Adcock, who won the Bank of Scotland Scottish International in Glasgow two weeks ago, reached today's final of the mixed doubles at the Yonex Irish International.

The British pair beat Denmark's Mads Pieter Kolding and Julie Houmann 21-18, 21-11 in Dublin then defeated Croatia's Zvonimir Durkinjak and Stasa Poznanovic 21-14, 21-10.

In the women's singles, another Glaswegian. Susan Egelstaff, also reached her final with a 21-18, 21-12 over Iceland's Ragna Ingolfsdottir before overoming Spain's Carolina Marin 21-19, 22-20.

CRICKET- Frustration for England' seam hopefuls

One wicket in 78 overs is no obvious recommendation for a Test call-up - but there was mitigation aplenty in a lifeless MCG pitch for England's three Perth hopefuls.

Tim Bresnan, who took one in the first innings, Chris Tremlett, and Ajmal Shahzad tried everything to try to extract something from a surface which is almost certain to yield a third successive declaration today. Paul Collingwood (3-19), Monty Panesar (2-83) and even Andrew Strauss (1-51) took the scalps as Victoria closed day two of three on 278 for six, and a lead of 310, after England had called time on their own first innings on a lunchtime 184 for two, with Ian Bell 60 not out.
