Terry Christie: My comfort blanket is restored as new season gets underway

Strange without fans, but Premiership’s return is reassuring

Never before has there been a start to the football season similar to this year’s. Football without fans is strange and it is something I have found hard to get used to.

But I still warmly welcome the recommencement of our Premiership. Perhaps because it is a sign of returning to something like normalcy but more probably it is because for me it is a comfort blanket.

Toddlers have their own well sucked piece of old material and I have football. And like all Hibs fans I have spoken to, I am full of optimism.

I just know that manager Jack Ross’ new signings, Kevin Nisbet and Alex Gogic, are just what was needed. Kevin will get us goals and Alex is just the kind of midfield enforcer we have needed since the departure of Marvin Bartley to Livingston.

The season for Hearts does not start until October (not sure why) and I expect them to do well.

Players who struggled in the Premiership will find it easier in the lower league and, with any luck, the influential Steven Naismith will stay free of injury.

Manager Robbie Neilson’s experience of the Championship is a huge bonus and I fully expect Hearts to top the league come the end of the season.

Much of my Saturdays are spent in my car driving to and from matches and listening to Radio Scotland’s coverage of Scottish football.

They do a great job. Off the Ball with Tam Cowan and Stuart Cosgrove is a hoot and Richard Gordon’s Sportsound, which provides live commentary, is informative, stimulating and seldom dull.

So here we go.

A warm welcome to the new season – the old comfort blanket is still doing its job.
