Stephen Halliday: No slight on Darrell Currie in BT Sport’s exit

Anyone who has watched Darrell Currie’s consummate anchoring of BT Sport’s widely praised coverage of Scottish football in recent years would understand why he felt slighted by what he described as “disrespectful” comments from Neil Doncaster regarding the new five-year contract with Sky Sports which is due to begin next season.

But in Doncaster’s defence, having listened to the full interview with the SPFL chief executive on the Price of Football podcast, it’s only fair to point out he made no explicit criticism of BT Sport. He was simply responding to a question prompted by Scottish subscribers to the podcast who unfavourably compared Sky’s coverage of the SPFL to that of BT Sport. It’s understandable that Currie, pictured, a fine broadcaster who clearly loves Scottish football, should lament BT Sport’s exit. Sadly, his BT Sport bosses didn’t value it highly enough to stick around.
